Cisco Jabber offers secure collaboration with contacts. Jabber allows you to send instant (text) messages to individuals or groups and share your screen. Click the tabs below to learn about the Jabber system.
Getting Started
Click on the accordions below to get started with Jabber.
Logging On
To logon to Jabber, do the following:
- Click the Cisco Jabber icon on your desktop
or under Window > Start > Programs > Cisco Jabber. - In the top field, enter your network username.
- In the bottom field, enter your network password.
- The Jabber Docked Window (main screen) displays.
- Jabber shows a short cut toolbar at the top of your screen.
Setting Your Status
Your status lets others know at a glance whether you are available or not. Set your status by using the steps outlined below.
- In the top left corner of the Hub, click the My profile and settings icon to access the drop-down menu.

Select one of the built-in statuses. Note: Jabber sets the following statuses for you automatically:
- In a meeting
- Away
- Offline
- Available (default)
- Select Add Custom Status to create your own label, such as Lunch.
- Select the status you want to show.
Hiding Docked Window
The docked window which shows the Jabber shortcut bar, can be moved out of the way by following the steps below.
- Click on the gear to open Menu.
- Click on View.
- Click Show docked window. This removes the docked window from your desktop screen.
Separating Chat Screens
To Separate Conversations from the Hub:
- In the Hub, click My Profile and Settings.
- In the menu, click Settings.
- In the Settings window, click Appearance.
- Under App View, click Classic.
- Click OK.
- A Message appears notifying you Jabber needs to restart to make this change. Click Restart Jabber.
To Separate Individual Conversations:
If you keep several chat instances open at the same time, you can separate chats into their own independent, moveable windows by doing the following:
- In your Conversations window, make the chat you want to separate the active chat by clicking on the Conversation.
- At the top right of the Message field, click Show this chat in a new window.
- The chat is now in its own conversations window.
- To regroup the chat, click Return this chat to the conversations window.

Adding New Contacts
To add people to your contact list, do the following:
- Click Contacts
. - Type a name into the search bar.
- To add the contact to your list, click the Add icon beside their name.
- In the Add contacts window, click the drop-down menu to add the contact to an existing group.
- Click New Group to create a new group.
- In the Group Name field, enter the new name.
- Click Create.
- Click Add.
- Hover over the name of the contact then do one of the following:
- Click Chat
to start a conversation. - Click Phone
to call this contact.
- Click Chat
Deleting Contacts
To delete members from your contact list, do the following:
- Right click the name of the member to be deleted.
- Click Remove.
- A prompt displays indicating ‘Do you want to remove..?’, click Remove to confirm.
Creating Groups and Group Chat
To create groups and group chats, do the following:
- Click the Menu gear.
- Click File > New > Group
- In the Create a New Group window, enter the group name.
- Click Create.
- To add members to your group, do the following:
- Click Settings > File > New > Contact.
- In the Search box, type the name of the member to add. Double-click to select.
- Repeat until all new members have been added.
- Select the group for the name(s) or contact(s).
- Click Add.

Highlight the group name in your contacts list and click the chat icon.

Note: You can add additional people from your contacts list to your group chat by clicking on their names. - In the Start Conversation window, click Start Group Chat.
- Type in your message and press Enter to send.

Making Calls
To make a call using Jabber, do the following:
- Click on the name of the person from your contact list, or type the name in the search bar.
- Click on the Call
icon.
Incoming Calls
To answer an incoming call in Jabber, do the following:
- Click on the Call Settings icon in the bottom left of the Jabber screen.
- In the Device for calls section, use the drop-down arrow to choose Use my computer.
- Select other preferences as needed.
- When calls are received, an incoming call box displays, click on the Chat Reply, Answer, or Decline buttons accordingly.
Conference Calls
To initiate a conference call, do the following:
- Click on Contacts.
- Right click on the group.
- Click on Start conference call.
Sending a message
To send a message to an individual, do the following:
- Click on the name of the person from your contact list, or type the name in the search bar.
- Click Chat
. - At the bottom of the chat window, the following options are available to to enhance your message.
- Send a file
- Send a screen capture
- Edit the font
- Insert an emoji
- Add mention

Screen Sharing
Note: If both associates are working remotely, you must be on different VPN's in order to share Jabber screens.
To share your screen, do the following:
- In Jabber, click on a contact.
- Click the Chat icon to display a conversation message box.
- Click the ellipsis
to expand the menu. - Click Share Screen
. - Select the screen you want to share.
- Click Share.
- Note: In the top right side of your monitors, the corresponding number will show to help you select the correct screen.
- The other associate receives an invite letting them know that you would like to share your screen.
- As soon as they accept, your screen becomes visible to them.
- A message displays at the top of the screen you are sharing.
- To end sharing, click the Stop button.
