Foreign Checks Sent for Collection

Any non-U.S. check, including Canadian checks that do not qualify for immediate credit, must be sent for collection. Do not give clients immediate credit for any type of collection item. Once we receive payment from the paying bank, we post the credit for the check to the client's account.

Note: Reg CC does not apply to foreign items, DO NOT place holds.

Canadian checks can be approved to deposit without sending for collections; see Canadian Checks. Send any other non-U.S. check to collections.

To send a foreign check for collection review, do the following:

Prior to submitting a check for collection, review the following with the client:

  • All applicable fees
    • Outgoing International Item fee (this fee is charged up front). See the Other Services and Fees brochure.
    • Intermediary and Paying Bank fee (fees start at $150.00)
    • Certified Mail fee (charged up front; starts at $5.00)
  • Checks sent for collection can take more than 90 days for payment to be received
  • Advise the client not to send checks of $500.00 or less for collection due to fees charged in comparison to the amount the client receives
  • Provide alternate methods for client to receive the funds (for example: wire transfer)
  • Do not provide a rate quote on any check sent for collection. The exchange rate may vary based on the date the item is processed by the paying bank.

Collection Receipt

  1. Complete a Collection Receipt Form.
  2. Give the client a copy of the Collection Receipt form and a photocopy of the check sent for collection.

Sending for Collection

Send the collection items and the original copy of the Collection Receipt form in a purple envelope to Deposit Services. Note: Each office is provided with purple envelopes designated for items sent to Deposit Services.
