Upgrading to Microsoft 365

Tips for a seamless upgrade process

Microsoft 365 is a "product family of productivity software." It will replace current versions of Office programs, including Outlook, Word, Excel, OneNote, and Powerpoint by April 2023.

These new cloud-based versions of the traditional Office suite of applications look and function similarly, but with upgraded features and security.

Before the Update

A few settings will not transfer to the new programs during the upgrade. Take a screenshot of these areas to ensure you can quickly recover your settings and shortcuts:

Desktop & Shortcuts

  • Desktop shortcuts to Office applications
  • Start menu pins of Office applications
  • Taskbar pins (along the bottom)

OneNote

It is highly recommended to take a screenshot of your open Notebooks. These notebooks do not automatically remap themselves after the update. Taking a screenshot will ensure you know where they are located so you can easily find them after the update.

  1. Open OneNote.
  2. Click File.
  3. The tab opens to the Notebook Information section.
  4. Include all notebooks in the screenshot.

Custom Tags and the Quick Access Toolbar - If you established custom tag symbols, keyboard shortcuts, or toolbars, you will need to recreate them after the update.

Post-Update

Outlook

The navigation pane will move to a vertical orientation on the left-hand side of the window.  To return it to the bottom:

  • Open Outlook.
  • Click File.
  • Select Options > Advanced.
  • Deselect Show Apps in Outlook
  • Click OK
  • Restart Outlook.

The Search function is now at the top. Use the navigation arrow in the search bar to open additional search filters.
