Mutilated/Unfit Currency & Coin

Rev. 10.25.2024

Overview

In day to day client transactions, tellers receive currency that is badly soiled, dirty, defaced, limp, torn, or worn. For reasons of identification, this currency is referred to as mutilated and/or unfit currency. When received, mutilated currency is organized in a compartment of the teller drawer. Do not record a running total on a piece of paper and bundle with the mutilated currency.

Capital City Bank (CCB) does not accept mutilated currency notes.

  • Mutilated currency is currency which has been damaged to the extent that one-half or less of the original note remains, or its condition is such that its value is questionable.
  • Currency notes can become mutilated in any number of ways. The most common causes are fire, water, chemicals, and explosives; animal, insect, or rodent damage; and petrification or deterioration by burying.
  • Contact Retail Support prior to accepting any currency that meets this definition.
  • Unfit currency is any badly soiled, dirty, defaced, disintegrated, limp, torn or worn out currency note that is clearly more than one-half of the original note, and does not require special examination to determine its value, is not considered mutilated and should be included in your normal deposit.

Unfit currency should be organized in a compartment of the teller drawer. Do not record a running total on a piece of paper and bundle with the unfit currency. Separate unfit currency from fit currency. Sell unfit currency to the working cash drawer or vault drawer as needed.

If presented with mutilated currency we do not accept, refer the client to the Federal Bureau of Engraving and Printing, U.S. Treasury Mutilated Currency Division toll free number 866.575.2361.
