Definition

A campaign is a planned set of activities that people carry out over a period of time in order to achieve something such as social or political change. Local, state, and federal political campaigns are subject to strict record retention requirements which are the responsibility of the campaign treasurer. The campaign treasurer is required to open all bank accounts for the campaign.

Note: The campaign candidate may also serve as the treasurer.

Required Documentation to Open Account

  • Form DS-DE9: Appointment of Campaign Treasurer and Designation of Campaign Depository

Tax Identification Number (TIN)

The campaign's EIN, certified by the campaign treasurer, is used for Internal Revenue Services (IRS) reporting.

The State of Florida does not require the use of an Employer Identification Number (EIN) for campaign accounts.  If a campaign account does not obtain an EIN, the candidate's Social Security Number (SSN), certified by the candidate, is used for IRS reporting.
